Maxwell wrote his book 'Ring of Brightwater' whilst living in his
isolated cottage overlooking Sandaig Bay on the West Coast of Scotland. The location is idyllic with a pebbly and rocky shore line, areas of sand, crystal clear seas leading to a small island with mountains in the background. Directions for walk - Not the easiest place to reach - around 200 yards before a cottage park on side of road, follow a good track down hill - you will soon see signs indicating the route to Sandaig Bay. This take you down the side of a stream and is difficult and steep in places. This brings you to the island, and to the left on the other side of the stream is the spot where Maxwell had his cottage. Beware the stream is slippery! Alternatively ignore the signs and just follow the track down and you will eventually reach the place. Ever get the feeling that they do not want visitors here! Places to stay - there are many
good B&Bs in the area but we suggest you book ahead. A good
selection of cottages around the coast of Scotland can be found at www.seasidecottages.co.uk Property at Letterfearn is nearest. |
